Toronto to get $203M, Vancouver and Montreal to split about $108M more under city-specific housing plan

Doug Ford announces that cuts to municipal public health and childcare programs will go ahead

Under his revised plan, local municipalities will be forced to cover 30 per cent of all their public-health costs, starting next year. The province currently covers 100 per cent of the cost of certain public-health programs, and 75 per cent of others… the Premier is going ahead with a move to renege on the previous Liberal government’s pledge to fund 100 per cent of the costs of new daycare spots, instead offering municipalities 80 per cent.

Lawyers condemn Doug Ford government cuts to legal-aid funding

A large cut to legal-aid funding from Ontario’s Progressive Conservative government will leave some of the province’s most vulnerable and impoverished people without proper representation in court, lawyers warn, while also slashing Legal Aid Ontario’s budget for refugee and immigration cases by two-thirds… the cuts will mean more courtroom delays and a lack of legal help for people fleeing oppressive regimes, fighting for the custody of their kids or facing other court proceedings.

Ford government to cut more than 3,400 Ontario teaching jobs over four years

… for an estimated annual saving of $292-million by the fourth year… The job cuts would work out to an average of less than one teaching position for each of the province’s almost 5,000 publicly funded elementary and secondary schools… The teachers unions have objected to the plans for increased class sizes and mandated online courses for high schools – changes that prompted thousands of students to walk out Thursday.

Ontario urged to take on silencing lawsuits

The Ontario government should crack down on lawsuits filed by developers or corporations that are designed to silence opposition from activists or the public, a blue-ribbon panel of legal experts says… The recommendations for Ontario Attorney-General Chris Bentley, released to Tuesday, say the province should follow in the footsteps of Quebec and about half of the states in the U.S. and craft anti-SLAPP legislation. Under the recommendations, the proposed law would protect “all communications on matters of public interest.”
