Trusting the Ford government to get health reform right? That’s a big ask

… if you want doctors working overnight on-call shifts when you have a medical emergency, you want doctors to be associated with hospitals… public hospitals aren’t for-profit but they have budgets, and they make money on the easy procedures so that they can afford to handle the hard, necessary, more laborious ones… farming out easy surgeries without expanding public capacity needs to be considered carefully.

Ontario does not need more for-profit surgery

Repealing Bill 124, for example, would be a first step in attracting nurses back to hospital ORs, and moving surgeries to dedicated community facilities could increase volumes by 30 per cent for roughly the same cost. But investing more broadly in for-profit surgery providers – which has enormous risks for hospital staffing, and will increase the costs passed on to patients and taxpayers – should not be on the table.

Our health-care system is broken. More of the same won’t fix it

In fact, Canadian medicare is more costly than ever, and more expensive than in other countries with universal health care, yet less responsive to patient needs. What’s the remedy? … medicare has long relied on private operators who take payment from the government – not the patient – to deliver those services… voters will tire of the ideological rigidity that conflates medicare’s commendable values with a system that doesn’t always deliver measurable value for money.

Why for-profit homes won’t solve long-termcare issues: Privatizing health services is a bad idea that just won’t go away

… for-profit services do nothing to address the major crisis in labour force supply, do nothing about public costs and do too little about public access to care. In fact, they do the reverse; they drain the public system of both people and money. Adding more for-profit services fragments a system already suffering from fragmentation… And the public sector is in a position to quickly offer better work for health-care workers who are at the centre of our health-care system, and more equitable access for all.

Ontario should live up to child care deal

… within months of pledging to partner with the federal government, the province was already stripping a series of checks on funding rules that guarded against “undue profits” and “ineligible expenditures” by operators… The federal government, meanwhile, must make clear that Ontario must live up to the deal it signed, in both detail and spirit.

Don’t be scared into supporting privatized health care

The privatization options will not begin to address the problems of a demoralized and depleted health care workforce and the overzealous constraints on public health care spending and will have negative consequences for both equity and efficiency. How will Canada expand a health-care system that’s already struggling?

Everyone should have access to routine dental care and vision care and necessary medications — and other things, like mental-health supports and physiotherapy… This is important on humanitarian grounds. It would also, though, optimize the primary-care system: a person who is kept out of hospital by proper dental care means one more bed available for someone who truly needs it.

Ontario’s health-care system isn’t candy store to be plundered

With our health-care system reeling, Ford is charging ahead with further privatization — Ontario health care is already 40 per cent private — and selling this as a way to save the system through “innovation.” … The system’s problems have been thoroughly studied by countless commissions and the solutions do not involve privatization… Ontario has lots of unused hospital operating rooms, idled after years of cutbacks.

Ontario extending $10/day child-care opt-in deadline to get more operators to apply

Just a few weeks ahead of September, uptake varies widely across municipalities, with some — particularly smaller areas — seeing all or nearly all operators apply, while other regions are seeing less than half of operators applying so far… In Toronto, the largest region, 587 out of a total of 1,042 licensed child-care centres have applied to opt in — and 32 have opted out — though the percentage of for-profit operators that have applied is much lower than the non-profits.
