Canada place third behind Sweden and Portugal on the latest Migrant Integration Policy Index, a benchmark European study that measures a range of indicators, from political engagement and paths to citizenship to public education. Canada’s ranking crept up two places from fifth two years ago, due largely to government efforts to recognize the credentials of foreign-trained professionals and to the addition of education measures that gave high marks to the multicultural model.

… eliminating the application process for the low-income pension supplement would be… a huge efficiency gain… Thousands of needy seniors miss out on this benefit because they don’t apply. Some don’t realize they have to. Some can’t handle the paperwork because of language or literacy problems. Some are disabled by dementia or illness… The government saves millions of dollars every year by quietly ignoring the fact that many impoverished seniors aren’t receiving the pension top-up to which they are entitled.

Figures released by Statistics Canada last week highlight a disconcerting trend for charities. The report showed that 5.6 million people donated money last year. That was down from 5.8 million in 2008 and was the lowest number of donors since 2002, when 5.5 million people gave money. In dollar terms, total donations dropped to $7.75-billion in 2009 from $8.19-billion in 2008 and $8.65-billion in 2007… Not that long ago, nearly one-third of taxpayers reported a donation; now the percentage is less than one-quarter.

NationalPost.com – Opinion/Editorial – Break the standoff
Published: June 13, 2009.
Summer approaches, so it must be time for another annual confrontation with Mohawk “warriors” intent on flaunting their contempt for the law.
