Not the time to cut corporate taxes
Saturday, April 3rd, 2010
Apr 03 2010
A Liberal government would be a partner in achieving this goal – by making investments in learning, innovation, families, and clean energy – along with a credible approach to fighting the deficit and our already competitive corporate tax rates. We believe that a discussion about business taxes in this country should be a comprehensive one. In particular, I look forward to hearing your views on the present government’s decision to increase (rather than freeze) payroll taxes by 35 per cent over the next five years.

In search of the recovery
Wednesday, March 31st, 2010
March 31, 2010
…Jim Stanford, the Canadian Auto Workers economist, is using videotape and his acting skills to make his point that there is no economic recovery. For just under $10,000, Mr. Stanford shot a video last December (the editing was just finished and it’s been posted to YouTube) called “The Curious Case of the Missing Recovery.”

A reason to celebrate: The lowest paid in Ontario just got a raise
Wednesday, March 31st, 2010
Mar. 31, 2010
The recent rebound in minimum wages still hasn’t fixed the damage from decades of neglect. In real terms, the average minimum is still a dollar lower than in 1976. And relative to average hourly productivity, minimum wages have continued to shrink…. to help low-wage workers capture the same share of output as they did in the 1970s, minimum wages should be increased to $12.50 an hour. To bring low-wage workers up to the poverty line, it should go higher.

Canadians can’t afford to lose productivity race
Wednesday, March 31st, 2010
Mar 31 2010
Canada’s social agenda… is hostage to a more innovative economy…. As Dodge put it, with improved wealth creation we can have a more caring Canada, but without more wealth creation there’s not much we can do for the vulnerable members of our society. That is the most important message out of the Liberal thinkers’ conference.

Minimum wage stalled?
Wednesday, March 31st, 2010
Mar 31 2010
Ontario cannot afford to fall behind again on minimum wages. The size and timing of the next increase is something for debate. But at the very least the minimum wage should be tied to the cost of living so that its value is not eroded by inflation.
…a minimum wage that is high enough to lift a worker out of poverty is part of the package of necessary measures.

Harpernomics
Tuesday, March 30th, 2010
March 29, 2010
Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Finance Minister Jim Flaherty responded to our report with harsh words. Both criticized the report as being “ideologically” motivated. Minister Flaherty was “disappointed” and remarked that our report was “poorly done” and “shabby.” …
Our study, supported by a large body of academic evidence, confirms that the stimulus package didn’t work. It’s time for the government to admit its stimulus mistake and return to prudent fiscal policies.

Clash of cultures blamed in Vale Inco strike
Monday, March 29th, 2010
Mar 27 2010
The United Steelworkers union says a clash of cultures is at the root of the dispute. It argues that Inco’s Brazilian owners want to instill a foreign brand of subservient labour relations here; run roughshod over existing workers’ rights and cut bonus pay at a time when the company is profitable…. The company claims the union is misleading its members badly. It says the union steadfastly refuses to accept that the Sudbury operations need significant restructuring to make them profitable and internationally competitive over the long term…

Innovation out of our hands in a branch-plant economy
Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010
Mar 23 2010
If it feels at times that we’re living in someone else’s country, in some degree we are. With one of the least domestically owned economies among our industrial peers, it’s long past time we confronted the implications of foreign ownership on our lack of control over productivity, on which our prosperity very much depends.

What level of ‘pensions’ do Canadians really want?
Friday, March 19th, 2010
March 19, 2010
Canadians — employers, employees and the self-employed — need both adequate information and, most importantly, appropriate vehicles to provide efficient risk-adjusted management of their savings both during working years and in retirement… if Canadians want high incomes and consumption in their retirement years, they will have to save more of their incomes and forgo more consumption during their earning years.
