Ontario changing pharmacist payments to save government $436-million

Ontario has reached a tentative agreement with the province’s pharmacists that will see them take millions of dollars less in payments over the next half decade… It would also see the government pay pharmacists a flat fee for every patient receiving prescriptions in a long-term care home rather than paying for each individual prescription that’s issued… [and] scrap a $2 co-payment that long-term care residents currently pay on each prescription.

Ontario wants to expand midwives’ ability to prescribe medications

Ontario wants to give midwives across the province the ability to prescribe a wider variety medications, a move those in the profession say could help improve patient care. Health Minister Christine Elliott said Monday that consultations are underway to expand midwives’ scope of practice with the body that regulates the profession. She said the province wants to enable midwives to use their education and training more effectively.

Health units worried about province’s plans to consolidate 35 agencies into 10

The planned transformation comes as the government lowers its public health spending, requiring municipalities to contribute millions more to their health budgets than anticipated. By 2021-2022, the provincial cut is expected to be $200 million annually… The consolidation will nonetheless mean that health units will have to serve larger geographic regions, which include communities with different needs.

Students demand Ford government reverse course on OSAP changes

Nour Alideeb, the Ontario chair of the Canadian Federation of Students, said students from the lowest income families will bear the brunt of the cuts to grants. “Our message to the government is you messed with the wrong people,” she said. “We’re going to be here to make sure that you’re actually listening to the people, which are the students, and students want to see a reverse on the OSAP cuts but also public investments into our institutions.”
