How paying people’s way out of poverty can help us all

… there’s an increasing awareness, among even the country’s most wealthy, that poverty reaches beyond the tables of the hungry and digs into their own pocketbooks. When people are poor, out of work or homeless, it hurts the bottom line of all Canadians… the country is becoming economically polarized. And the decades-old dominant economic dogma that growing wealth among society’s highest earners would trickle down to those less fortunate is being challenged by an alternative approach: Eliminate crushing poverty among the lowest earners, and wealth will trickle up.

Chief statistician asked to rethink census for 2016

Mr. Smith…has been asked to study how other countries gather information and report with options that could shape the 2016 census. Examples range from a register-based census, where governments dip into their records on their citizens, to surveying a different part of the country every year… if we could make a register[-based] census work in Canada, we could save buckets of money and avoid annoying a whole bunch of Canadians in asking them to fill out forms

Clement accused of misrepresenting census impact

Growing unrest within Statistics Canada and growing anger from groups of every political persuasion have left Stephen Harper’s government facing a revolt over its plans to end the mandatory long-form version of the census. Officials within Statscan believe Industry Minister Tony Clement is misrepresenting the advice he has been receiving from the internationally respected agency charged with gathering data on Canadians.

Weakened by recession, charities face uncertain future

A recent survey of 1,500 charities by Imagine Canada, a national umbrella body, found that 22 per cent said they were at risk because of the economic downturn. Just under half said they were having difficulty fulfilling their missions… Individual donations dried up as donors cut back, foundations slashed grants as their endowment funds shrank, and governments pulled funding to cope with rising deficits.
