Same-sex marriages of non-resident couples not legal: federal justice department

Thousands of same-sex marriages since 2004 involving couples from outside Canada are in limbo as result of a new position taken by the Conservative government. In a nutshell, government lawyers are arguing in court that if same-sex couples could not be legally married in their home country, then their Canadian wedding is not valid… the shift in federal policy is one of several recent changes “that highlight the Harper government’s paradoxical stance on gay rights in Canada.”

Halt corporate tax cuts, Liberals say

The Liberals on Thursday urged the federal government to halt billions in corporate tax cuts, saying it’s irresponsible to help companies when the country is drowning in debt… Regan chastised the Conservatives for forging ahead with a tax break “we can’t afford” when Canada’s corporate tax rates are already amongst the lowest in the G7… The corporate tax cut amounts to $1.65 billion next year, and jumps to nearly $4 billion in 2012.

Pension reform should aid women

Retired Canadian women aren’t getting their fair share of federal pension benefits compared to men, Ontario Finance Minister Dwight Duncan said Monday… that’s just another reason the entire system of retirement benefits needs to be overhauled with an eye to phased-in “modest” benefits increases… As of December 2009, the average annual CPP retirement benefit for women was $4,906.56, compared with that of men of $7,128.24 or about 69 per cent.

Ottawa short-changing Ontario immigrant programs: province

The federal Conservative government has short-changed Ontario at least $193 million in promised money for immigrant settlement programs, the provincial government says. Ottawa agreed in 2005 to transfer $920 million over five years in new immigration funding to Ontario, ending March 31.
