Idealism in a ‘deeply cynical age’

… we have a political system which has fallen into the hands of the corporate lobbies and we have a business elite which violates the law with alarming frequency and a Wall Street financial centre which not only broke the law but helped to create one of the most painful financial disasters in economic history that we’re still living through. That’s why people are upset. They want a restoration of democracy. They want money out of the political system and they want a fairer economy.

The brain: For adolescents, a scary path to full development

While the vast majority of adolescents make an uninterrupted, if sometimes bumpy, transition to adulthood, it is also the case that these are the peak years for the onset of psychiatric disorders. “We now know better what might be the neural mechanisms that underlie the differences in behaviour. That’s helpful. But we still don’t know why…” Examining the circuitry that links cognitive and emotional systems… offers key insights into developmental windows when adolescents are going to be more prone to either a negative spiral or a positive improvement.
