Our initiatives:

The Government of Canada is committed to developing a Canadian Poverty Reduction Strategy to reduce poverty and improve the economic well-being of all Canadian families so that they can have a real and fair chance to succeed.

Poverty is a complex issue that affects more than 3 million Canadians. That means that 1.9 million families struggle to make ends meet.

To ensure that the Canadian Poverty Reduction Strategy reflects the diversity of needs and approaches throughout the country, we are:
– consulting with Canadians across Canada on poverty reduction;- establishing a Ministerial Advisory Committee on Poverty through an open call for nominations to select leaders, practitioners and experts with experience in poverty and poverty reduction as well as a separate targeted call for nominations to select people who have experienced poverty; and
– conducting the Tackling Poverty Together research project – an in-depth case study in six communities across Canada.

Consulting Canadians on poverty reduction
To better inform the development of the Canadian Poverty Reduction Strategy, the Government of Canada has launched an online and in-person consultation process to engage with Canadians on key issues related to poverty.

All Canadians are invited to participate in the online consultation that will run from February to June 2017.

Advisory Committee on Poverty
A public call for nominations is now open to interested individuals who have experience with poverty reduction from four key areas—including academia, international expertise, service delivery and business.

The Government of Canada has launched a separate targeted call for nominations for Canadians who have experienced poverty.

The Committee will provide independent expertise and advice on issues related to poverty reduction to help inform the Canadian Poverty Reduction Strategy.

Tackling Poverty Together
Tackling Poverty Together is a research project dedicated to understanding poverty in Canada and identify what can be improved to lift Canadians out of poverty.

The results from the project, which will involve case studies in six communities across Canada, will inform the Canadian Poverty Reduction Strategy.
