Re Ontario’s becoming the new Quebec. It should become the new Michigan < http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/rob-commentary/instead-of-the-new-quebec-ontario-should-become-the-new-michigan/article31378805/ > (Aug. 12):
Ontario has made a deliberate decision to invest in a high-skill, high-wage economy, and when you look at the numbers, you can see the benefits. Our unemployment rate is at an eight-year low of 6.4 per cent, and we recently announced that our economy posted stronger GDP growth than Canada, the United States and all other G7 countries. Ontario’s economy is growing faster than Michigan’s when you look at real GDP: In the first quarter of this year, Ontario grew at an annual rate of 3 per cent while Michigan grew by 2.6 per cent. In 2015, Ontario grew at a rate of 2.5 per cent while Michigan grew by 1.4 per cent.
Over the past year, manufacturing sales in Ontario have increased by 7.6 per cent and international merchandise exports are up by 12.6 per cent. Private-sector economists project that Ontario will continue to lead the country in growth and that we will continue to see increases to our manufacturing exports. Within the auto sector, monthly sales of goods manufactured here were higher in 11 months of 2016 compared to the same months in 2015.
Michigan is one of our most important trading partners and there is a lot we can learn from each other, especially in the auto sector. We recently signed a memorandum of understanding to promote collaboration, innovation and regulatory competitiveness between our jurisdictions.
Our government’s top priority is to create jobs and grow the economy.
– Brad Duguid, Ontario Minister for Economic Development and Growth
