Democracy should shape capitalism, not the other way around

Rather than the values of the so-called free market, democratic core values are, at root, collective, policy-related, social values, not simply personal prejudices. Ultimately, an election must be about these wider social values. Otherwise our elections will devolve into a bagatelle of biases, a potpourri of personal value differences rather than a referendum on what kind of economic, political, and ecological society we hope to become.

Giving thanks for civil discourse

In establishing the CBC, the prime minister claimed that “the country must be assured of complete Canadian control of broadcasting from Canadian sources. Without such control, broadcasting can never be the agency by which national consciousness may be fostered.”… Both the CBC, with its historically insightful documentaries and series programming, such as Ideas and Tapestry, and the Massey Lecture series, with its commitment to publicly accessible scholarship, are not ancillary, but central, to a vibrant Canadian democracy…

What religion can learn from the social sciences [human rights/social justice]

… in the 1960s when Latin American theologians turned to the social sciences, including Marxist analysis, to understand the roots of historic, institutionalized poverty and oppression, their critics were powerful and plentiful… These liberation theologians were accused of “reducing” the Gospel to a political message… No religion is an island. All are in need of dialogue with other cultural, spiritual and intellectual traditions to help them “awaken” to the “signs of the times,” including human rights abuses.
