Canadians crave a reason to hope

The problem is no one is really articulating a future-oriented vision these days… Such a vision ought to be bold, ambitious, and inclusive. It should aim to inspire… “for the future to have power over the present, it has to be different than the past.” It’s time for our political leaders to set out a better and different future. Canadians are ready to follow them there.

The U.S. and Canada have little differences, but today, they are adding up fast

American society is tilted slightly more towards freedom than order. Canadian society tilts slightly in the other direction… Americans are richer overall, but the median Canadian household now earns more than its American peer. Research in fact shows that Canadian households in the bottom 56 per cent of the income distribution are better off than the same American households.

Never forget the dignity and courage of our essential workers

One hopes, in particular, that a main takeaway of this whole experience is that we’re permanently reminded that work is imbued with dignity and is something to be valued. It’s important not just for the economy but for the character of the people. It’s a key a source of our individual meaning and self-worth… from doctors to grocery cashiers — who acted heroically and helped us get through it… They stepped up when we needed them most. And we should let them know that we know it.

To fight regional economic disparity, Ontario needs Opportunity Zones

… the transition from an industrial economy to a knowledge-based economy seems to be exacerbating them as part of a global trend that urban scholar Richard Florida describes as “winner-take-all urbanism.”… This trend toward place-based bifurcation isn’t just about economic activity either. It’s manifesting itself in demography, educational attainment, health outcomes and other socioeconomic characteristics.
