Ottawa to cut health care for some refugees

Thursday, April 26th, 2012

Apr 25 2012
Currently, all refugees are covered by the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP), which provides basic health coverage, sometimes with supplementary services such as pharmaceutical care, dentistry, vision care and devices such as walkers and wheelchairs, if required… The plan announced Wednesday stipulates that rejected claimants and refugees from designated countries won’t be eligible for health care unless their conditions put the public at risk. All refugees will also be stripped of supplemental health coverage.

Ontario urged to eliminate OHIP wait

Friday, February 4th, 2011

Feb 03 2011
…advocates for immigrants are calling on the province to eliminate the three-month wait time for newcomers to access OHIP. The Right to Health Care Coalition, a network of more than 30 Greater Toronto agencies, will launch a “postcard campaign” Friday to put the issue on the electorate’s radar… The policy, said to save Ontario $90 million a year, also serves as a “disincentive to persons moving to Ontario only briefly for the purpose of getting free medical services” …Ontario and British Columbia [are] the only provinces with such restrictions in place.

Immigrant women hurt by barriers to health care: Study

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

March 30, 2010
According to the study, fifteen per cent of immigrants who had been here for less than five years said they don’t have a family doctor, more than double the rate for Canadian-born men and women… “Some of them would not need to go to the emergency if they could get to a doctor’s office,” said lead researcher Arlene Bierman. “The country’s visible minority population will double by 2031… We need to be able to better serve the growing health-care needs of this community and reduce barriers.”
