Real governments don’t stuff important non-budgetary policy changes into bloated omnibus budget bills

Budget bills used to be about tax changes — nothing more, nothing less. The Tories should return to that model, saving measures on unrelated topics for separate bills that can be scrutinized and voted on independently. It’s a fairer, more transparent way to govern. And it’s but a small sacrifice of convenience for governments with nothing to hide.

All-day kindergarten is a waste of money
Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

… the truth is that the main benefit of a longer kindergarten day is free childcare for working parents. Which is fine, if that is what the government hopes to accomplish. However, they should come clean about what they are doing and why — an act that would allow costs to be cut by hiring qualified caregivers rather than qualified teachers for the added “school time.” An even more efficient way to achieve the free child care would be to simply give parents the equivalent cash, to spent on the childcare arrangement of their choice.

Ask not what Ottawa can do for you? [immigration guide]

What distinguishes Canada from so much of the non-Western world is that, human rights commissions notwithstanding, the government is restrained from interfering in personal matters of religion and thought… The 68-page guide devotes less than half a page (roughly 14 lines) to the totality of our traditional ordered liberties, including habeas corpus. And those 14 lines are merely a list with no elaboration or examples.
