Canadian Mental Health Association, Ontario Division is part of a new provincial program that will support adults on the autism spectrum and their families.

The Public Health Agency of Canada recently announced it has awarded a strategic fund to Autism Ontario to launch Mental Health Matters, a mental health program for adults on the autism spectrum and their caregivers that will be delivered in partnership with CMHA Ontario, McMaster Autism Research Team (MacART), SAAAC Autism Centre and the York ASD Partnership.

At the core of Mental Health Matters are two existing CMHA Ontario programs tailored specifically for adults on the autism spectrum and their caregivers: Mood Walks and Living Life to the Full. Mood Walks is a provincewide initiative that promotes physical activity in nature, or “green exercise,” as a way to improve both physical and mental health. Living Life To The Full is a 12-hour, eight-week program based in cognitive behavioural therapy that teaches stress coping and skill-building tools to better manage life’s challenges.

Each of these existing CMHA Ontario programs will have two separate iterations: one tailored to adults on the autism spectrum and one for caregivers of individuals on the autism spectrum.

Mental Health Matters is made possible by the Autism Spectrum Disorder Strategic Fund of the Public Health Agency of Canada, and will roll out over the next 22 months in Ontario. Learn more about Mental Health Matters here.
