Ontario’s Ministry of Education announced the list of more than 200 sites for the second phase of its roll out of all-day kindergarten Tuesday.

The program will be introduced this fall in nearly 600 schools, and by September of 2011, with the additional 200 schools the full-day option will be available to about 50,000 students across the province.

“What we’re hearing from school boards is there has been a very healthy response to this initiative, parents are voting with their feet on this one,” said Minister of Education Leona Dombrowsky.

The list of schools that will offer the program in 2010-11 and 2011-12 is available online.

The province has pledged $200-million toward the all-day program for the next year, $300-million for the second year and another $245-million to build classrooms to accommodate the program. All-day kindergarten will be available everywhere in the province by 2015.

The full-day learning program is based on a model put forward last spring by former deputy education minister Charles Pascal that would pair teachers with early-childhood educators in the classroom throughout the school day, and provide extended hour programs to parents for a small fee.Critics such as the Institute of Marriage and Family Canada have said the program will be too costly for a province in the red, and that the real cost of full-day kindergarten will double initial estimates, reaching $1.8-billion annually.
