OTTAWA — A new study ranking countries’ health performance puts Canada in the middle of the pack.

A Conference Board of Canada study released Tuesday placed Canada 10th out of 16 countries in health and quality of health services.

That is down from a fifth-place finish in the 1990s.

The study says Canada is at risk of falling further down the list if it fails to address chronic diseases such as diabetes.

The annual study ranks countries’ overall health, not just their health-care systems.

Japan topped the yearly list, followed by Switzerland and Sweden. Denmark placed last, below the United States and Britain.
