Canada, it should abandon its nonsensical ban on private medical insurance for essential health-care needs… There should be a medical-visit user fee for those who can afford it and absolute guaranties against unacceptable waits. In the name of equality, Canada has imposed what amounts to a capricious and inhumane health-care rationing system that should be acknowledged and ended.

Privatization a bad deal for Ontarians

Those who want a steady return of nearly 5 per cent can simply buy long-term provincial bonds. Prospective investors in government enterprises would clearly expect more. If investors could not increase profits by taking over management, the only way to achieve a higher return would be to buy shares based on a lower initial valuation.

Privatizing not the answer

If privatization were the answer, there would be no need for government in the first place. Even as Canada and the rest of the developed world pick up the very costly pieces of a global economic system that came within hours of collapse, we here in Toronto remain touchingly faithful to the gospel of the marketplace. We are true believers, expecting – and seeing – miracles at every turn…
…privatization might indeed be good for Toronto, or at least, its bottom line. But it’s likely residents would feel otherwise. Various services might well be improved, but at what cost?
