OTTAWA–An aging population and growing awareness mean the number of people living with disabilities is on the rise in Canada, according to a newly released report.

More people with disabilities have access to jobs and the aids they need, but the wage gap between those with disabilities and those without is growing.

Last winter, the Israelis attacked minarets in Gaza. Last month, the Swiss voted to ban non-existent minarets.

The reasons proffered in both cases were patently false.

Bombed Gaza mosques probed by Justice Richard Goldstone were found not to have been hiding Hamas arms or militants.

The whining pundit longing for debates on matters of substance is a trope long past its due date, but I’m compelled to tread my deep worn tracks once again.

The level of political discourse at Queen’s Park last week was well below that found in a three-year-old’s birthday party.

Suffice it to say, matters of importance, from Children’s Aid Societies to the strike in driving test centres, have been forced to the margins.

It is time to expand adoptions of native children so that non-native parents can give them the love and nurturing that any child needs. It is scandalous that a vast population of native children are in state care with no hope of being adopted into a family. That scandal has come into public view in an arson case in Sudbury featuring two native boys, 12 and 13, who burned down a popular community centre, the Steelworkers Hall.

It is popular to assume that the workplace has become an even playing field. Stubborn trends of inequality – like a continued and widening gender pay gap and lower returns on education for women than for men – are explained away with “choices.” We are to believe that women “opt out” of equal work, pay and quality jobs.

OTTAWA – Immigration Minister Jason Kenney is accusing physicians’ organizations in the provinces of dragging their feet in the effort to speed up recognition of foreign-trained doctors.

Kenney told reporters today that the foot-dragging has a cost to Canada.
