Dr. Rocco Gerace of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario has reinforced my suspicion that the shortage of doctors in Ontario has less to do with acceptable standards and more to do with the protection of privilege and position.
The doctor says the college wants to make sure the provinces have the same standards so no one gets into the system through the back door. In other words, Ontario does not trust that Alberta, British Columbia or any of the other provinces (besides Quebec) are capable of accrediting doctors to standards that assure Canadians of competent health care. This is baloney.
I have long felt that the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (not the college) should be accrediting training institutions and not individuals. Therefore, any medical doctor trained in any accredited institution anywhere in the world should be allowed to freely come to Ontario, get registered and practise medicine.
By doing so, we will have access to more doctors who have received excellent training from medical schools all over Canada and the world.
