As a student at Queen’s University in Kingston, I was a constant target of racial profiling by the Kingston police force. I was constantly being followed in my car, trailed while walking home, searched, questioned, singled out and humiliated in front of my peers. My stories were met with suspicion and disbelief by friends and acquaintances. They did not believe the police would target me without just cause.

Ontario needs a full-time pension champion to get more workers into big, sophisticated pension plans, says the province’s Expert Commission on Pensions.

But the new generation of private pension plans foreseen by commissioner Harry Arthurs would likely be less generous and have fewer guarantees than the traditional defined-benefit plan.

Tracking discrimination

The collection of race-based statistics remains controversial, but there are signs that Ontario is increasingly ready to accept this approach to tracking discrimination.

A wide-ranging report on youth violence, released last week, listed “the collection of race-based data in all key domains” as one of its priority recommendations. In response, Premier Dalton McGuinty has indicated he is seriously considering the idea.

Farm workers across the province are celebrating the fruits of a major legal victory after the Ontario Court of Appeal ruled they have the right to unionize.

In a 3-0 decision yesterday, the court said the Agricultural Employees Protection Act, which prevents farm workers from collective bargaining, “substantially” impairs their right to freedom of association under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
