Who goes to university? A clue: Have a dictionary?

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

TheGlobeandMail.com – Opinions –  Who goes to university? A clue: Have a dictionary?
March 28, 2009.   JEFFREY SIMPSON

A good old-fashioned dictionary. If you want to know who goes to university – and this is the time of year when prospective students are thinking about fall education possibilities – check whether the family home has a dictionary.

A dictionary is not literally the ticket to university. It’s more like a symbol of what’s going on in the family, and what kind of family the prospective student comes from.

He came looking for a meal. He kept coming because he found acceptance, self-respect and a sense of purpose.

For eight years, Sam – whose real name is Bobby Yurczyszyn – has been a regular at St. Stephen’s Community House. Getting a grip on greed

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

TheStar.com – Opinion – Getting a grip on greed
March 24, 2009.   Linda McQuaig

Don’t get me wrong: I’m not against tarring and feathering those AIG guys who helped destroy the world economy with their financial manoeuvres, and then received million-dollar bonuses to undo their own handiwork.

But focusing just on them is like just going after the crude thugs who unleashed dogs on Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib, without noticing that their actions were the product of a climate of lawlessness and vengeance fostered by the White House.

Premier’s chance to show leadership

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

TheStar.com – Opinion – Premier’s chance to show leadership
March 23, 2009.   Carol Goar

As provincial budget day nears, anti-poverty activists find themselves facing a frustrating new obstacle.

Many Ontarians believe the poor have little to lose in a recession.

Intuitively, this makes a certain amount of sense. How much worse can life get for a person living on a $572 monthly welfare cheque? How much farther can a family that has hit rock bottom fall?

But there are two flaws in this homespun logic.
