Toronto is about to join four other Canadian cities in a $110-million study aimed at determining how best to house homeless people who are mentally ill.

The Health Canada-funded project, being run by the Mental Health Commission of Canada, a non-profit group, intends to house 300 people in Toronto through a “housing first” approach, meaning regardless of whether the client is off drugs, alcohol or both, housing will be provided for them.

Who is going to care for Canada’s rapidly aging population?

It is far from clear. In a stark report released last month, a special senate committee warns that the average age of a registered nurse in Canada is close to 50. And, while we have less than a third of the required doctors who specialize in clinical care of the elderly, there are only a handful of new geriatricians in training.

Ontario’s human rights laws are quite clear, and hard times don’t justify breaking them.

So it’s alarming that an increasing number of pregnant women are losing their jobs, with the recession being used as an excuse. The Ontario Human Rights Legal Support Centre, funded by the province to help people experiencing discrimination, says it’s now getting an average of 10 to 15 calls a week on this issue.

Grade 7 has been a banner year for 12-year-old Matthew Leaton. His project on earthquakes was a winner of the science fair at his Brampton middle school. In February, he was chosen to make a presentation at the assembly honouring Black History Month.

And eight months into the school year, he has been suspended only once.
