TheStar.com – Opinion – Success often comes through helping others: It’s people who contribute to the lives of others who can be called model citizens
May 11, 2009.   Alan Broadbent, Chair of the Maytree Foundation

For more than 20 years, we’ve had an unbridled celebration of entrepreneurs, innovators and their success. We have made heroes of entrepreneurs and innovators, at least at the level of the public discourse.

Canadian values boil down to liberal democracy

Saturday, May 9th, 2009

TheGlobeandMail.com – Opinions/Special Commentary – Canadian values boil down to liberal democracy
May 9, 2009.   CLIFFORD ORWIN

Our Minister for Immigration and Multiculturalism, Jason Kenney, has recently championed a major reform of the government’s programs for immigrants to Canada. He proposes that erstwhile Canadian citizens be better educated in “Canadian values.” And not just the fluffy stuff, like recycling (as in the current manual). But just what are core “Canadian values”?

May 09, 2009

In this essay in the latest issue of New Internationalist magazine (www.newint.org), written largely for a European audience, Haroon Siddiqui, Toronto Star editorial page editor emeritus and columnist, argues that Canada has made a stunning success of multiculturalism, unlike any other nation in the West.

Multiculturalism is being trashed in Europe. My Canadian view is:

Education our only magic elixir

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

TheStar.com – Columnist – Education our only magic elixir
May 07, 2009.   James Travers.  Ottawa

These are peculiar times. Pigs catch swine flu from humans, Canadians who didn’t buy Chryslers (or Fiats) now own a pricey piece of the company and while we struggle to save feudal Afghanistan, nuclear Pakistan is failing.

Connecting those scattered dots is the disturbing common denominator of misunderstanding. A convenient label for a complex virus is so confusing the flu’s cause and effects that consumers are afraid to eat pork.

Welcome boost for poverty bill

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

TheStar.com – Opinion/Editorial – Welcome boost for poverty bill
May 07, 2009

It is significant that a bill committing the Ontario government to a plan to reduce poverty was passed with all-party support in the Legislature yesterday. It suggests there is widespread agreement among the politicians that it is no longer acceptable – either morally or economically – to leave more than a million Ontarians in poverty.

Giving a voice to recession’s victims

Monday, May 4th, 2009

TheStar.com – Opinion – Giving a voice to recession’s victims
May 04, 2009.   Carol Goar

The last time Canada went through a recession, there was no Facebook, no high-speed Internet access and no online chat rooms. Email was in its infancy.

That meant public perceptions were shaped largely by economists, politicians and pollsters. The people who were hurting were seldom heard.

This time it will be different, anti-poverty activists vow. Technology has given them the ability to link up, highlight the distress signals they see and tell their stories.

Mental illness affects anyone

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

TheStar.com – Healthzone.ca – Mental illness affects anyone
May 02, 2009.   Elvira Cordileone, Staff reporter

Star reporter Elvira Cordileone asked members of the Parkdale Activity – Recreation Centre, a neighbourhood drop-in centre, for their definitions of mental health. Their responses:

Maynrd Plane, 69  –  Cerebral palsy

I can understand when a person’s not feeling well or if he’s dragged down too much he can’t focus on his work or anything he does. And if they don’t take their medication that doesn’t help very much either.
