It was a mid-week morning in the conference room of a Kingston hotel. The select committee on mental health and addictions was taking submissions. Paul and Denise Finn were next up.

Mental illness and addictions often go hand in hand. Yet addicts are routinely told they must get clean before they can access mental health services, and those suffering from serious mental illness are often turned away from addiction programs.
Unfortunately, this is just one example of our dysfunctional health system, which provincial Health Minister David Caplan says is organized for “the convenience of providers,” not those in need.

When Liberal MPP David Caplan was appointed provincial health minister a year ago, he naturally turned for advice to his mother, Elinor, who held the same job between 1987 and 1990.
She cautioned him about the job’s hectic pace and counselled him to focus on just a few issues where he wanted to leave his mark. The younger Caplan opted to make mental health and addictions a priority.

I’ve now lived longer in Canada than in any other country. But whereas in my almost 26 years in England I never sought British citizenship, I got a Canadian passport as soon as I was able to do so. Not having felt that I belonged in Poland where I was born, or Sweden where I grew up, I came to feel at home in Canada.

Last fall, in the middle of a schizophrenic breakdown, a 21-year-old man approached a woman in the parking lot of a north Toronto supermarket and asked for directions. As she began writing out a map, he stabbed her in the neck.
Charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and weapons charges, the man was suddenly facing the maximum penalty under the Criminal Code – life in prison.
