Down with capitalism
TheStar.com – TIFF – Down with capitalism. Moore braces for U.S. reaction to latest doc, the strongest since his debut 20 years ago
September 15, 2009. Peter Howell. Movie Critic
Michael Moore may look like he’s in a jolly mood, munching grapes as he banters during an interview yesterday at TIFF.
But the finger pointer from Flint, Mich., is angry, really angry, about what’s happened to his beloved country America in the past year and over the past three decades.

Diversity a low priority in civil service
TheStar.com – Opinion – Diversity a low priority in civil service
September 14, 2009. Carol Goar
Tired of endless studies and unkept promises, a handful of non-white employees of the federal government forged a solidarity pact 10 years ago to fight for change from within.
They founded the National Council of Visible Minorities. They vowed to change the face of the public service and knock down the barriers that held people back because of their skin colour.

Harper looks beyond the fringe [Court Challenges Program]
TheStar.com – Opinion – Harper looks beyond the fringe
September 11, 2009. Antonia Zerbisias
I’m thinking of making T-shirts: “Proud to be a member of that `left-wing fringe group’ called `Women.'”
They’d be pink, of course, for socialism – and also for the pink triangle, the badge the Nazis made gays and lesbians wear before shipping them off to the camps.
Thanks to Prime Minster Stephen Harper, those T-shirts will make me rich!

September 10, 2009
Attorney General Chris Bentley set out to “renew legal aid” and place it on “a strong, sustainable foundation for the future.” But the changes and the boost to annual funding that he announced earlier this week, while welcome, are unlikely to achieve his aim.

Indigenous peoples around the world, who now number 370 million, have been routinely marginalized, impoverished and victimized. At the United Nations, efforts have been made to affirm and protect the rights that are indispensable to their survival and well-being.

Making the case against universality [child care]
TheGlobeandMail.com – Opinions/Editorial – Making the case against universality: A new report from the OECD undercuts calls for full-day kindergarten and universal child care
Sep. 08, 2009
On the list of timeless political homilies, none is more popular than the one demanding that we spend more on our country’s children. But which children? When? And how much?
Last week an Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development report, titled “Doing Better for Children,” attempted to answer these tough questions.

How to save a community landmark
TheStar.com – Opinions – How to save a community landmark
September 07, 2009. Carol Goar
This could have been a story about a working class neighbourhood losing a cherished landmark. The demolition order was ready.
It could have been a story about a small community group being brushed aside by municipal decision makers. That is where the plotline was heading.
But someone was smart enough to change the trajectory.

Let the courts judge hate crime
TheStar.com – Opiion/Editorial – Let the courts judge hate crime
September 04, 2009
The Canadian Criminal Code is tough on hate-mongers, and rightly so. It provides for up to two years in jail for wilfully promoting hatred against identifiable groups. That’s a major deterrent to racists, homophobes and other purveyors of hate in the media or anywhere else.

A modest (pro bono) proposal [legal aid reform]
TheStar.com – Opinion – A modest (pro bono) proposal
August 31, 2009. Mike Foderick, PAST-PRESIDENT AND CO-CHAIR OF PARKDALE COMMUNITY LEGAL SERVICES
Ontario Legal Aid, the primary mechanism by which thousands of the poorest Ontarians access the justice system, is at a crossroads as literally hundreds of criminal defence lawyers have, en masse, begun refusing to accept new legal aid cases for several serious offences.
They argue that the current legal aid tariff is antiquated and must be updated.

Building a bridge to northern children
TheStar.com – Opinion – Building a bridge to northern children
August 31, 2009. Carol Goar, Sandy lake first nation
It began with a box of sweaters. Micheal Hardy, executive director of the North-South Partnership for Children, remembers the moment clearly.
He was working in his office in Sioux Lookout. At the time, he headed Tikinagan Child and Family Services, the aboriginal equivalent of the Children’s Aid Society. The phone rang. It was Maurice Brubacher, director of family and children’s services for Guelph. “Do you want a box of sweaters?”
