Monday, October 5th, 2009

TheStar.com – Opinion – Frat House in need of woman’s touch
October 05, 2009.   Carol Goar

Watching Parliament lurch from one manufactured crisis to the next, it is clear there is something wrong with the talent pool from which Canada’s elected representatives are drawn.

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

TheStar.com – Editorials – Why not let cities decide on stimulus?
September 29, 2009

As Prime Minister Stephen Harper reported in Saint John, N.B., yesterday, about 90 per cent of the federal government’s recession-fighting measures are already in the works, “stimulating our economy and creating jobs from coast to coast to coast.”

TheMarkNews.com – Articles – Freedom from Want
First published Sep 25, 2009.   Robert Rainer, Executive Director of Canada Without Poverty (CWP/CSP).

1. The poverty of the homeless, who number as many as 300,000 – about one in 110 of us.
2. The poverty of the millions of working poor whose insufficient earnings do not meet ends. (They, too, are often among the homeless.)

TheStar.com – Business – Illiteracy costs Canada, individuals
September 27, 2009.   Ellen Roseman

In my work, I often see people who don’t bother to read the key paperwork that governs their business dealings.

They can read, but they’re reluctant to go through documents of more than a few pages in length.

Almost half of Canadian adults (48 per cent) have low literacy skills, according to the Canadian Council on Learning, a non-profit organization based in Ottawa.

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

TheStar.com – Opinion – Focus on inequality not diversity
September 17, 2009

Re:Diversity a low priority in civil service, Opinion Sept. 14

The many comments posted on the Star website in reaction to Carol Goar’s column show how divisive diversity programs are. They promote an “us versus them mentality” rather than harmony. Canada is a civic nationalist country that judges everyone by individual merit, not group identity.

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

TheStar.com – Opinion – How to fix our broken refugee system
September 16, 2009.   Carol Goar

The issue is ripe for a crackdown. The government has already hinted it wants to rewrite the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

The sales pitch almost writes itself: Bogus refugees are overwhelming our borders. We must set limits. We are becoming a global laughingstock.

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

TheStar.com – Opinion – How to measure Gross National Happiness
September 15, 2009.   Martin Regg Cohn

Since its emergence in the 1930s, per capita GDP has been a proxy for our personal well-being. In short, our happiness.

Now two Nobel-laureate economists, Joseph Stiglitz and Amartya Sen, have called for clarity about what passes for well-being. Their landmark report, submitted this week to French President Nicolas Sarkozy, is an impassioned plea to politicians and economists for a broader vision:
