Too much government

Today, in Canada, all levels of government, through all their taxes, can confiscate as much as half or more of a taxpayer’s income, in total…
And yet, like the abused spouse rushing back to an abuser, many Canadians continue to sing the praises of ever bigger and bigger government.

Thursday’s National Post has an op-ed written by a couple of Fraser Institute types entitled “Scrap the Parliamentary Budget Office”. It’s a remarkable piece of rhetoric. Although its stated purpose is to make the case for eliminating the PBO, it ends up demonstrating once again why an effective PBO is so desperately needed.

TV Ontario has asked me to go on a panel to discuss whether capitalism needs to be rebranded. I assume they don’t actually want us to talk about branding. Anyone sensible loathes the whole idea of branding. Branding is just PR. Not what your product actually does, but how you get people to get a warm feeling inside about what you can persuade them to believe it does.

Ontario’s fiscal woes come as bad news for the growing number of Ontarians dealing with the fallout from the recent economic storm.

As provincial coffers dry up, thousands of individuals and families also face increasing financial hardship. With unemployment expected to hit 10 per cent by 2010, there could soon be 400,000 of us out of work.
