Re: Good Policy, Risky Politics; Voters Could Penalize Tories For Immigration Plan, John Ivison, March 14.

Imagine being highly skilled, but losing your job because government-implemented draconian affirmative action policies. At the same time, the countries that can use your skills prevent you from emigrating because they don’t want to poach from developing countries. It’s a Catch-22.

Re:Reserve won’t get new school, despite YouTube campaign – March 10

A long list of schools needs to be built on First Nations reserves, and Attawapiskat, on James Bay, just got bumped off the list because needs are greater elsewhere. The children here have been promised a real school instead of makeshift portables for eight years. They are in portables because a diesel spill left their environment toxic.

Misplaced priorities

TheStar.com – comment/editorial – Misplaced priorities
March 11, 2008

For eight years, children in Attawapiskat have been going to school in cramped portable classrooms after health concerns over decades-old diesel fuel contamination closed the local school.

In most parts of Canada, such appalling conditions would spark public outcry and quick government action. But in Attawapiskat, a remote First Nations reserve on Ontario’s James Bay coast, parents and children are being told they will just have to wait for a new school.

Liberty – hostage to medicare

National Post – opinion/editorial

The Ontario Superior Court on Thursday rejected a Sikh man’s claim to a religious-freedom exemption from the province’s law on mandatory motorcycle helmets. Supporters of safety as the holiest of political principles upheld the ruling as a triumph of reason; Sikh organizations denounced it as an act of naked discrimination against their faith. Few stepped forward to defend the idea that an adult in a free society should be able to wear what he wants and take the risks he wants where only his own body is concerned.

Rights on reserves

Saturday, March 8th, 2008

National Post – opinion/editorial
Published: Saturday, March 08, 2008

We have long advocated an end to the treatment of Canadian aboriginals as members of tribal collectives rather than as individual citizens. In that vein, we welcome the introduction on Tuesday of legislation that would help on-reserve families gain clearer title to their homes, and give aboriginal women matrimonial property rights when marriages break down.

RENE PROVOST AND MAUREEN DUFFY

Canada has long enjoyed a reputation around the world as a champion of human rights. A new law, approved last month by Parliament, may undermine that reputation. It should also be cause for concern for all Canadians.

Caledonia + 2

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

National Post – opinion/editorial
Published: Tuesday, March 04, 2008

It was two years ago last week that aboriginal squatters from the Six Nations reserve south of Brantford, Ont., began their occupation of the Douglas Creek Estates development, halting work on the new subdivision and disrupting life and commerce in the nearby town of Caledonia. It is long past time, then, for both the provincial and federal governments to put an end to this shameful flouting of the law and all the ancillary crime it has spawned.

Re:Flaherty’s tax-saving plan – Comment, March 4

Michael Mendelson is right. High-income families will benefit the most from Finance Minister Jim Flaherty’s tax-free savings plan. Only the financially well-off will be able to take full advantage of the $5,000 per year/per person tax-free accounts. Low- and middle-income families generally will not have that luxury.
