Ontario Government Announces Consultation on Temp Agency Work
Poverty Watch Ontario – Ontario Government Announces Consultation on Temp Agency Work
Posted: 28 May 2008
Treated like second class workers – not getting public holiday pay, vacation pay and having to pay fees for work only to be denied access to permanent work. These are just some of the conditions facing temp agency workers who make 40% less then permanent workers. That is why the Workers’ Action Centre has been calling on the government to take action on temp agency work and all precarious work that leave all too many working yet poor.

Why is defending ancestral lands a crime?
TheStar.com – comment – Why is defending ancestral lands a crime?
May 26, 2008. JIM COYLE
When Premier Dalton McGuinty was explaining why Legislature rules needed changing, he liked to say that codes written in the time of gas lamps were hardly suited to a BlackBerry age.
It didn’t take him long to update them to his tastes.
Native leaders, wondering why a Mining Act dating to the days when prospectors staked claims with picks and shovels should still apply in an age of multinationals and high-tech machinery, wish McGuinty would react with half the alacrity to their concerns.

Fixing the Young Offenders Act
Nationalpost.com – opinion/editorial – the Young Offenders Act
Published: Thursday, May 22, 2008
Despite the Supreme Court’s ruling on youth crime last week–or perhaps because of it — the federal Conservative government is forging ahead with a comprehensive review of Canada’s exceedingly lenient 2003 Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA). They must. The majority on the court may believe young offenders have a “fundamental” right to separate, lax treatment. But the public also has a right to be protected from violent criminals.

Sorry to say, but the apology-seeking industry is thriving
TheGlobeandMail.com – commentary – Sorry to say, but the apology-seeking industry is thriving
May 20, 2008. JEFFREY SIMPSON
We were told 20 years ago, in 1988, that the apology would be the last because the injustice was the worst.
So declared then-prime minister Brian Mulroney in offering an apology, payments and a community fund for Japanese-Canadians interned during the Second World War. This was a terrible abuse, the prime minister said. It was a unique case. There would be no more.

Protest message should be heard
TheStar.com – comment/editorial – Protest message should be heard
May 20, 2008
On May 29, First Nations people across Canada will stage a “day of action” to draw attention to the poverty, appalling living conditions and despair that plague many of their communities.
Their message will be an uncomfortable one for a country that prides itself on being one of the most forward-thinking in the world. But there are reasons for all Canadians to listen closely.

Ensuring ‘access to justice’
TheStar.com – comment – Ensuring ‘access to justice’: We need to keep legal processes simple and reduce the steps required in lawsuits
May 18, 2008. Warren Winkler
Ontario’s justice system is as vast as the province itself. On any given day, judges may fly to remote First Nations communities in the North, rule on zoning issues in Ottawa, resolve custody matters in Hamilton, or handle mortgage disputes over the sale of farmland near Sarnia. Thousands of problems, real life problems, will be dealt with today, and every other day, from one end of Ontario to the other.
