Every child deserves parental support. It should be a right, not a frill or a privilege. Yet thousands of Ontario children of broken marriages are being denied their due, despite repeated provincial vows to crackdown on deadbeat parents. As the Star’s Daniel Dale reported on the weekend, the problem is getting worse, not better.

Michael Creek isn’t letting Ontario use the softening economy as an excuse to delay plans to fight poverty.

“In good times we are ignored and in bad times we’re told there’s no money. But a year ago the premier made a promise and we’re going to hold him to it,” said Creek, 50, who slipped into poverty 13 years ago when he became ill with cancer.

Canadian employers may not like an Ontario court’s decision objecting to the firing of an employee with a major mental illness. But the ruling in the case of Paul Lane, who was fired eight days into the job when he began acting strangely, struck a blow against the stigma of mental illness. It was the right decision.

Clearly, a compulsory item future U.S. presidential candidates will have to commit to memory will be the number of houses they own.

Sadly, however, there may be no other repercussion from Republican John McCain’s inability last week to remember that he owned seven.

Conservative pundits were quick to suggest that attempts by Democratic rival Barack Obama to make an issue out of McCain’s wealth would backfire since, they said, Obama is the real elitist who’s out of touch with ordinary Americans.
