The OECD finds Canada a country of the comfortable middle

NationalPost.com – Full Comment/Editorial – National Post Editorial Board: The OECD finds Canada a country of the comfortable middle
Posted: October 24, 2008, by Kelly McParland

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) handed out report cards on income inequality this week, and Canada received what you might call a C-minus. From 1970 onward, according to the OECD, Canada exhibited increasingly flat income distributions; but since the mid-1990s, when equality peaked, the rich have been growing richer more quickly than the poor.

Maybe the rich are the problem

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

TheStar.com – Opinion – Maybe the rich are the problem
October 21, 2008. Linda McQuaig

John McCain clearly thought he’d found a winning issue last week when Barack Obama was caught on tape defending his plan to tax the rich and “spread the wealth around.”

Gotcha! For days, the faltering Republican nominee relentlessly harangued Obama for saying such a thing, championing “Joe the Plumber,” whose confrontation with Obama had provoked the remark.

Of course, many were surprised when Joe the Plumber turned out to be neither a real plumber nor a guy named Joe.

TheStar.com – Canada – Income gap growing wider: Canada lags behind 17 developed countries; has no detailed plan to fight poverty, study finds
October 21, 2008. Laurie Monsebraaten, Social Justice Reporter

Poverty and inequality rates in Canada have been on the rise since 1995 and are now higher than the average developed nation, according to a new study.

The income gap is growing throughout the developed world, but the gap between rich and poor in Canada widened more dramatically than in most countries between 1995 and 2005, according to the report released in Paris today.

Rich-poor gap widens in Canada

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

TheGlobeandMail.com – national – Rich-poor gap widens in Canada
October 21, 2008. MICHELLE MCQUIGGE, The Canadian Press

TORONTO — The gap between the rich and poor in Canada widened significantly in a recent 10-year period partly because Ottawa spent less on cash benefits than many other developed countries, the OECD says.

It was a reversal of the trend in the two previous decades when the gap was narrowing, the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development said in a report.

Ontario minorities left standing in Tory game of musical chairs

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

TheStar.com – Federal Election – Ontario minorities left standing in Tory game of musical chairs
October 14, 2008. Errol Mendes

Controversial legislation to redistribute seats in Parliament fell by the wayside when Prime Minister Stephen Harper called a federal election last month. But a re-elected Conservative government would almost certainly revive it. And that’s bad news for Ontario and its large population of visible minorities who will be casting their ballots today.

Equal pay law still dormant

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

TheStar.com – Opinion/Letter – Equal pay law still dormant
October 09, 2008

Re: Ottawa failing on equity, advocates say, Oct. 8

Thanks for continuing to champion social justice in these times of trouble. As a pay equity specialist for Canada’s largest union, I share the concern raised about the corrosive impact of recent federal economic policies.

Women and people of colour are over-represented in low-income families. Cancelling funding for high-quality early learning and child-care programs unfairly burdened poor households by limiting their right to work.

Monday, October 6th, 2008

NationalPost.com – news/election_2008 – Candidates still believe crime pays: Play on public’s concerns to win votes
Published: Monday, October 06, 2008. Shannon Kari

It has become a Canadian election campaign staple that politicians will tell the public the justice system is broken and changes are needed to crack down on crime, even when the crime rate is falling.

This year is no different.

Children of Chinese and South Asian immigrants to Canada do dramatically better over time than the offspring of blacks, Filipinos and Latin Americans, new census data reveal.

The findings, released quietly last week by Statistics Canada, suggest a new paradigm for understanding immigrants’ integration and success.

Anything but a Harper majority

TheGlobeandMail.com – National/Politics – Anything but a Harper majority: Atwood explains why she’s prepared to support even Gilles Duceppe if it means denying the Conservatives full control
October 6, 2008. MARGARET ATWOOD

I recently said I’d support Gilles Duceppe — that ardent separatist — if I were in a swing riding in Quebec that might otherwise go to a neo-conservative. I’m unrepentant. I’m with Danny Williams and Elizabeth May on this one: It really is Anything But a Harper Majority Time.
