Islands Of Repression [Freedom of speech at universities]

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

NationalPost.com – Opinion/Full Comment – Islands Of Repression
Posted: November 27, 2008. Ian Hunter

Universities serve many purposes and different communities but, first and foremost, a university should always be a bastion of free speech. How sad then, how in a macabre sort of way funny, that they have become instead (in William Bennett’s elegant phrase) “islands of repression in a sea of freedom.”

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

TheStar.com – Canada – GTA aboriginal groups get $20 million for affordable housing
November 27, 2008. Rob Ferguson, Queen’s Park Bureau

It will only put a small dent in waiting lists for affordable housing for aboriginals in the GTA, but activists say $20 million in support from the Ontario and federal governments is welcome.

The money, first earmarked by the federal government two years ago, will help an estimated 320 families living off reserves in substandard conditions find a better place to live or upgrade their homes.

Better off in the city [Aboriginal Canadians]

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

NationalPost.com – Opinion – Better off in the city
Published: Thursday, November 27, 2008. Mark Milke

Digging through census data is hardly a fun way to spend a few days. But if you think, as I do, that raw numbers might reveal much about people and communities, then mining recently released data from the 2006 census is at least productive. I did just that recently to get a numerical grasp on Canada’s aboriginal population, including those who prosper and those who fail, and with possible clues as to why.

Women bear brunt of downturn

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

TheStar.com – living – Women bear brunt of downturn
November 26, 2008. Antonia Zerbisias

We may all be tightening our belts, but women are feeling the biggest pinch.

They will soon be pounding the pavement, many starting in January, when you can bet that their jobs in retail will disappear.

The sale signs are already grim. Consumer confidence is the lowest it’s been since 1982.

Published: Tuesday, November 25, 2008

‘The principal recommendation of this report is that section 13 be repealed so that the censorship of Internet hate speech is dealt with exclusively by the criminal law.” We can’t recall the last time reading 28 words gave us such an exquisite frisson.

TheStar.com – Opinion/comment – Wanted: A party with vision: With Harper’s Ottawa missing in action, now’s the time for an activist policy agenda
November 22, 2008. Deborah Coyne

Canadians have traditionally looked to the Liberal Party of Canada for a sense that Canada means something more than the sum of its parts. Canadians know that a collection of provinces and territories, without bold and visionary national leadership, is not a real country.

Considering race-based statistics

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

TheStar.com – Opinion/letters – Considering race-based statistics
November 22, 2008

Re:Race stats confine black youth, Nov. 17

As a student at Queen’s University in Kingston, I was a constant target of racial profiling by the Kingston police force. I was constantly being followed in my car, trailed while walking home, searched, questioned, singled out and humiliated in front of my peers. My stories were met with suspicion and disbelief by friends and acquaintances. They did not believe the police would target me without just cause.
