TheStar.com – Opinion – How to make EI fairer
May 03, 2009
Unsurprisingly, the latest figures from Statistics Canada show a sharp increase in the number of Canadians receiving employment insurance benefits to 610,150, up 34 per cent from a year ago.
But with 1.4 million unemployed in Canada, that means only 43 per cent of them are receiving benefits.

TheStar.com – Opinion/Editorial – Protect workers’ rights
April 27, 2009
Ontario’s human rights laws are quite clear, and hard times don’t justify breaking them.
So it’s alarming that an increasing number of pregnant women are losing their jobs, with the recession being used as an excuse. The Ontario Human Rights Legal Support Centre, funded by the province to help people experiencing discrimination, says it’s now getting an average of 10 to 15 calls a week on this issue.

TheStar.com – Opinion – Economists calculate hidden price of tax relief
April 22, 2009. Carol Goar
One side of the story is easy to tell and appealing to hear: Vote for tax cuts and you’ll get to keep more of the money you earn.
The other side of the story is hard to quantify and easy to discount: Vote for tax cuts and you’ll get fewer – or worse – public services.
No wonder the tax-versus-services debate has been so lopsided for the past 15 years. Who wouldn’t pick cash over nebulous public services? Who couldn’t use more disposable income?

TheStar.com – Canada – Ignatieff eyes easier EI for Ontario
April 15, 2009. Tonda MacCharles, OTTAWA BUREAU
LONDON, Ont. – Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff plans to propose a radical overhaul of the employment insurance system that would provide equal access to jobless benefits for all regions of the country.
Ignatieff, on a tour of southwestern Ontario, told a business audience there should be “a national standard of eligibility” that sets a uniform number of hours that a worker anywhere in Canada would need to be eligible to draw employment benefits.

TheGlobeandMail.com – Opinions/Special Comment – EI has drifted far from social protection
April 15, 2009. JAMES STRUTHERS
Canada’s unemployment insurance system emerged in 1940 in response to the Great Depression and fears that mass unemployment would return at the end of the Second World War. It is the only time that all provinces agreed to surrender complete jurisdiction to the federal government.

TheGlobeandMail.com – Opinions/Editorial – Sponsors for schools
April 15, 2009.
Allowing corporate sponsors to invade the public schools in return for naming rights, as Toronto’s school board has begun to do, may seem, at first blush, like the epitome of crass. “This theatre a project of McDonald’s.” “This swimming pool courtesy of Coca-Cola.” “This playing field brought to you by Kellogg’s.” But schools in less affluent neighbourhoods need help. Corporate sponsorships have great potential to give them that help, if done properly.

April 14, 2009. JOE FRIESEN
A delegation of residential school survivors has been granted a rare private audience with the Pope in the Vatican, fuelling hope that Benedict XVI will apologize for abuse in institutions run by Roman Catholic missionary congregations.
