Life expectancy in Canada rivals that of almost any country in the world. A girl born today can expect to live, on average, to 82 and a boy to a more modest 76.9, according to Statistics Canada.

Immigrants face lower wages and are more likely than Canadian-born workers to be forced into temporary or part-time jobs, according to a new study.
The report from Statistics Canada, made public Monday, also found newcomers tend to end up in jobs for which they are overqualified.

Twenty-years ago today, Canada’s politicians stood in the House of Commons and committed to ending child poverty by 2000. Nine years past that deadline, success is still nowhere in sight.
Nationally, one in 10 children is raised in poverty, according to a report being released today. In First Nations communities, that figure rises to a staggering one in four.
How can we allow this to continue?

With the passing of the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, Canada must wrestle with the bleak reality that more First Nations children are in child welfare care today than were forced to live in residential schools at the peak of their operation.

In less than a month, an agency that cares for some of Ontario’s most vulnerable children in northern First Nations communities plans to close its doors because it can’t afford to pay its bills.
Payukotayno James and Hudson Bay Family Services is not alone. The vast majority of our children’s aid societies are facing budget shortfalls because the province has changed the funding rules.

There can be little doubt that almost everyone saw David Brown’s lawsuit coming a mile away. Any Canadian listening to the Caledonia man’s harrowing, shocking testimony before Ontario superior court judge Thomas Bielby this week, would have done the same in his shoes.
