Finance Minister James Flaherty’s economic and fiscal statement, Protecting Canada’s Future, combines economic bravado with social indifference.[1] On the economic side, the government clings to the façade of a balanced budget and minimal government intervention. Socially, it demonstrates little concern about the impact of the economic crisis on low income Canadians.
