Re:City looks at 5% budget cut, Oct. 25
Why is the city using welfare recipients as the scapegoat for a problem created by Mayor David Miller’s office? Councillor Joe Mihevc’s singling out of welfare as the cause of the city’s budget woes is at best disingenuous and at worst harmful to the thousands of families who rely on welfare services in the City of Toronto. Mihevc is attempting to direct the public eye away from the city’s poor financial management.

The numbers released on Thursday by provincial Finance Minister Dwight Duncan in his fall budget update are staggering. A record $24.7 billion deficit, roughly double the peak during Bob Rae’s NDP government ($12.4 billion), and a net provincial debt rising to $184.1 billion, again about double the level during Rae’s days.
Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak called it a “shameful” record for the Liberal government.

The Ontario Medical Association has asked employers to reconsider their sick-note policies so doctors can focus on treating the more seriously ill, rather than those who can recover on their own “and just need a note.”

Here are the highlights of the 2009 Ontario budget:
* A $108.9 billion spending plan, with a record $14.1 billion deficit due to plunging tax revenues. For the fiscal year ending next week, Ontario is posting a $3.9 billion deficit, up from the $500 million shortfall predicted last fall.
* A blended 13 per cent single sales tax as of July 1, 2010 encompassing the existing 8 per cent provincial sales tax and the 5 per cent GST.

Ontario’s already record budget shortfall has ballooned to a staggering $24.7 billion – billions higher than economists expected – and “difficult choices” loom, warns Finance Minister Dwight Duncan.
In the fall economic statement tabled Thursday in the Legislature, Duncan revised the deficit projection upward from the $18.5 billion he had announced in June (and the $14.1 billion in the March budget.)

It took seven months and a serious change of heart. But the Ontario government is finally getting serious about protecting live-in caregivers from routine exploitation.
Many of the more than 20,000 nannies in Ontario arrive here deep in debt after paying thousands of dollars in fees to recruiters, who often lure them with phantom job offers.
