What most of us don’t know about economics is a lot.

In the technical notes released by Finance Minister Dwight Duncan as he introduced Ontario’s proposed HST legislation this week, are equations so terrifyingly complex it seems conceivable the mere juxtaposition of any two figures therein could bring about either instant Armageddon or a Stanley Cup for the Leafs.

The number of people exhausting their jobless benefits is rising in line with large volume of claims, the federal government says.

It’s the first official indication of current trends in exhaustion rates of employment insurance beneficiaries, a measure that is regularly tracked in the United States but not in Canada.

The Stephen Harper Conservatives have adopted one of the worst policies of authoritarian oil-rich Arab states: an exploitative system of indentured labour, a.k.a. the temporary workers program.

You import workers on short-term visas, tether them to one employer, bar them from bringing families, deny them state benefits and services, and then ship them back at the end of their contract.
