Canada’s bankers have woken up. Hearing the cries for a supplement to the Canada Pension Plan or other larger-scale plan, they decided to use some gang-style protection tactics to guard and expand their turf.

Don’t let the government suck money into a single, quasi-public, one-size-fits-all plan, their Canadian Bankers Association warns in a report released Friday. Let us continue to protect you.

VANCOUVER, BC—Canadian governments provided businesses with more than $202 billion in bailouts, loans, and subsidies between 1994 and 2007, according to a new study released today by the Fraser Institute, one of Canada’s leading economic think tanks.

That works out to $15,126 per taxpayer over that 13-year period or $1,244 per taxpayer in 2007 alone.

Just in time for Christmas giving, Charity Intelligence Canada, which compiles an annual list of non-profit organizations that offer donors “the biggest bang for their buck,” has released its 2009 recommendations.

The number of Canadians receiving jobless benefits jumped 7.1 per cent in September, reversing two months of declines, led by increases in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia.

About 818,000 people got employment insurance in the month, marking a 63.5-per-cent increase since October of last year when the labour market peaked, Statistics Canada said Tuesday.
