Employers should pay higher premiums to protect injured workers and more employers should start paying premiums, Ontario’s auditor general urged Monday.

But injured workers may have to collect less, return to work sooner and be given fewer narcotic painkillers to help shore up Ontario’s Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, Jim McCarter suggests in his latest annual report.

It is popular to assume that the workplace has become an even playing field. Stubborn trends of inequality – like a continued and widening gender pay gap and lower returns on education for women than for men – are explained away with “choices.” We are to believe that women “opt out” of equal work, pay and quality jobs.

I’ve long thought excessive CEO pay is the cancer eating away at sound corporate management. Excessive pay for top management distorts decision making. It encourages reckless and short-term behaviour that damages the enterprise and undermines the wider economy.
