Improving EI much better stimulus than infrastructure

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

TheStar.com – Opinion/Comment – Improving EI much better stimulus than infrastructure
August 03, 2009.   Ken Georgetti, PRESIDENT OF THE CANADIAN LABOUR CONGRESS

The Ontario economy will receive $3.2 billion less in employment insurance (EI) benefits in 2009 than it would have under the program as it existed in 1990. Changes made year after year by the federal government have eaten away at EI, making it more difficult for laid-off workers to qualify for benefits.

Mixed signals on EI

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

TheStar.com – Opinion/Editorial – Mixed signals on EI
August 03, 2009

No relief is in sight for Canada’s 1.6 million jobless. Despite signs of a fragile recovery, economists predict more workers will lose their jobs in the months ahead.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper recognizes the “great tragedy” faced by laid-off workers who aren’t eligible for employment insurance (EI) benefits. He promised last week to address their plight when Parliament resumes in September.

On friendship between libertarians and liberals

Sunday, August 2nd, 2009

NationalPost.com – Opinions/Full Comment – On friendship between libertarians and liberals
Posted: August 02, 2009.   Gerry Nicholls

A few days ago I posted my views on the Cato Institute’s Will Wilkinson’s idea that libertarians should seek some sort of fusion with liberals.

In the process I made a few cracks about the Liberal Party, comments which Ron McKinnon a former Liberal candidate and current president of the Port Moody – Westwood – Port Coquitlam Federal Liberal Association took exception to.

Rusting industries find new best friend in PM

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

TheStar.com – Canada – Rusting industries find new best friend in PM
August 01, 2009.   James Travers, OTTAWA

Deep down, Stephen Harper surely has a soft heart. Nothing seems to stir the Prime Minister’s protective instincts quite like a faded industrial beauty.

Shipbuilding is the latest to feel the gentle, generous touch the auto sector first experienced last spring. Over the next 30 years, the few remaining marine yards will be cutting up $40 billion in public cash – if they can get their acts and contracts together.

A brief history of pensions. Pay attention because you may be about to lose yours

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

TheStar.com – insight – A brief history of pensions. Pay attention because you may be about to lose yours
August 01, 2009.   Thomas Walkom

The drive to dismantle the welfare state has a new target. Governments have already gutted unemployment insurance and social assistance. Out-of-date labour laws make it tough to organize unions in the new, decentralized, service-based economy. Now, thanks in large part to the dynamics of the recession, pensions are under attack.

The myth of manufacturing decline

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

NationalPost.com – FPComment – The myth of manufacturing decline
Posted: July 29, 2009.   Terence Corcoran

The 2009 recession has produced another round of hand-wringing over Canada’s declining manufacturing base. Weakness in high-profile sectors — autos, forest products, telecom — add to the already-entrenched idea that the heart of industrial Canada, its manufacturing base, has long been in the grip of a major long-term decline. Canada is being deindustrialized.

Don’t let recovery sideline EI reform

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

TheStar.com – Opinion – Don’t let recovery sideline EI reform
July 29, 2009.   Carol Goar

One of the last indicators to turn upward in an economic recovery is the jobless rate. Employers want to be sure the recession is really over before they start hiring. Managers want to keep their operations lean until demand picks up sharply. Even public institutions hedge their bets until the expansion is well underway.

Like it or not, we’re all neo-liberals now

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

TheGlobeandMail.com – Opinions/Web-exclusive commentary  – Like it or not, we’re all neo-liberals now: Have we become Keynesians once again? I think not, says David McDonald
Jul. 28, 2009.   David McDonald

Every dog has its day, and the same applies to economic theory. Today’s dog is neo-liberalism, a policy framework developed by economists Friedrich Hayek and Milton Friedman, which found political expression under Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan in the 1980s.
