TheStar.com – Opinions/Letter – Media buying Conservative spin
October 13, 2009.   Re:Michael Ignatieff must target Tory deficit, Oct. 10

With a few exceptions, such as James Travers, the media are playing right into the hands of the Conservative strategy. Stephen Harper wants to make the next election a personality contest between himself and Michael Ignatieff. As if it were a boxing match. Problem is, it’s not.

Industrial engine idling

Sunday, October 11th, 2009

TheStar.com – Opinion – Industrial engine idling: Ontario’s economy cannot prosper without a vigorous manufacturing sector
October 11, 2009.   David Crane

Without a revitalized manufacturing base, Ontario has little chance of a healthy economic recovery that delivers the good jobs and high productivity we need for sustainable prosperity.

So a key question as we face a federal election some time in the next 12 months is which party, Conservative or Liberal, can deliver the most effective manufacturing strategy for the province.

Friday, October 9th, 2009

acorncanada.org – listserve – Decision Time on EI
October 8, 2009

With politicians declaring to Canadians that the Recession is over, the Bank of Canada is reporting that “…the economy has continued to shed jobs (albeit at a slowing rate), average hours worked have fallen, and the unemployment rate has risen to its highest level in 11 years.”

Even worse, of the nearly 1.6 million out of work Canadians only about 45% qualify for Employment Insurance.

Drive a car, find a job

Friday, October 9th, 2009

TheGlobeandMail.com – Opinion – Drive a car, find a job: To get off welfare, people need to be behind the wheel
Published Oct. 08, 2009. Last updated on Oct. 10, 2009.    Peter Shawn Taylor

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

TheStar.com – Opinion – Gravy train doesn’t stop here anymore
October 07, 2009.   Thomas Walkom

The frontier between middle-class life and poverty is ill-defined. One day things are going swimmingly; the next day a family can find itself literally in the poor house.

That’s the theme of a new documentary film on real life in the Toronto area by Laura Sky and Cathy Crowe. Sky is a veteran filmmaker with a taste for justice. Crowe is a street nurse who works with the homeless.

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009

TheStar.com – Editorials – Finding a fix for broken pensions
October 03, 2009

The sleeper issue in this Great Recession, and likely the next election, is shaping up to be the perilous state of our pensions. Against a backdrop of economic upheaval that has brought more companies to the brink of collapse, it is impossible to ignore the vulnerability of private pension plans in Canada – for those who even have them.

Hits and misses in the recession-taming battle

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

TheStar.com – Opinion – Hits and misses in the recession-taming battle
October 02, 2009.   Carol Goar

Strip away the political hoopla, the deceptive statistics and the partisan catcalls and there are some clear lessons in this week’s progress report on the Conservative government’s recession-fighting plan.

Some kinds of economic stimulus work well in a downturn. Others are slow, cumbersome and trouble-prone.

Job creation is best left to employers. Policy-makers are better at creating ways workers can help themselves.
