Last fall, news that an Australian-based child care giant was setting up in Canada shook the early childhood community. The expression of interest from the global group of companies raised fundamental questions about the nature of Canadian child care: Is it a public service or a business venture? Is there room for profit-making in the care and education of our youngest children? Is it time to reconsider who should own and operate child care?

Toronto trustees voted to end a cherished program that provides intensive help to 250 struggling readers each year.
The vote late last night means that reading clinics, available in 32 schools, mostly in the old City of Toronto, will phased out in the next school year.

OTTAWA–The federal Conservative government is setting up a new $350 million Canada Student Grant Program to replace the Millennium Scholarships established by the Liberals nearly a decade ago.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government argues that its new system will be friendlier to students and more respectful of provinces’ constitutional power over education.

OTTAWA–Politically, this is a brilliant budget. It does not do what is needed to protect the country from the recession building up south of the border. But that is not its aim.
What is so clever – so artfully clever – about Finance Minister Jim Flaherty’s budget is that it satisfies both the short-term tactical needs of the governing Conservatives and their long-term ideological goals.

The province is kicking in $40 million over four years so elementary schools across Ontario can hire 160 new librarians, Premier Dalton McGuinty announced today.
McGuinty said it’s important to make sure students develop solid reading skills early on so they can reach their full potential.
“It’s one more thing that we’re doing along the way to improve the quality of learning for Ontario children,” he said before a group of young students at a Mississauga school.

OTTAWA — Enrolment in Canadian universities hit a record high for the fifth straight year during the academic year 2005-06, largely on the strength of foreign students and young adults.
Statistics Canada estimates that 1.05 million students registered for classes, 3 per cent more than in 2004-05.
In a separate study, the federal agency found that a record number of bachelor’s and master’s degrees were awarded in 2005.
