March 26, 2008 at 3:37 AM EDT
JEFFREY SIMPSON

Laid-off workers in the hard-hit manufacturing sector will get more cash to help keep their families afloat if they go back to school to learn new skills under a “second career†strategy in this year’s Ontario budget.
Finance Minister Dwight Duncan said some of the 20,000 people targeted by the plan could get as much as $30,000 to pay household bills and tuition, providing they go back to school for a two-year program.

James Daw: Something for seniors and students
TheStar.com – Ontario Budget – James Daw: Something for seniors and students
March 25, 2008
James Daw, Business Columnist
Senior homeowners, savers, cyclists, students and the poor will benefit from modest tax relief and assistance in Ontario’s latest budget.
The province’s economy is expected to grow slowly this year, and tax revenues will grow hardly at all. There will be less room to increase spending or provide relief within a balanced budget than in the year just ending.

Re:Reserve won’t get new school, despite YouTube campaign – March 10
A long list of schools needs to be built on First Nations reserves, and Attawapiskat, on James Bay, just got bumped off the list because needs are greater elsewhere. The children here have been promised a real school instead of makeshift portables for eight years. They are in portables because a diesel spill left their environment toxic.

When Gerard Kennedy was 23 and brimming with confidence, he took a stand he considered risky and politically sophisticated.
The Edmonton Food Bank, which he had just opened, was hit with twin crises. First the price of oil plummeted, throwing many Albertans out of work. Then the government cut welfare rates.
Kennedy sent an impassioned letter to the Ministry of Family and Social Services, outlining the human damage the cutback would do.

Misplaced priorities
TheStar.com – comment/editorial – Misplaced priorities
March 11, 2008
For eight years, children in Attawapiskat have been going to school in cramped portable classrooms after health concerns over decades-old diesel fuel contamination closed the local school.
In most parts of Canada, such appalling conditions would spark public outcry and quick government action. But in Attawapiskat, a remote First Nations reserve on Ontario’s James Bay coast, parents and children are being told they will just have to wait for a new school.

TheStar.com – comment/editorial – Lack of child care still a barrier

Today, as the world marks International Women’s Day, the theme is “Shaping Progress,” celebrating how far women have come since the day was first marked in the early 1900s.
And there are victories to celebrate, particularly women’s growing role on court benches, their place in universities and their prowess on athletic fields. But in the power fields of business and politics, women remain shockingly under-represented. And in any field, to get ahead women have to make many personal sacrifices.
