Nearly 100,000 students searching for the often-elusive summer job will get a $90 million helping hand from the province.
Students looking for summer work will face particularly stiff competition this year, with Ontario’s unemployment rate sitting at 8.7 per cent and 300,000 jobs lost in manufacturing.

Four years ago, I met a bright young kid named Mohammed Shafique, who lived in Regent Park, a low-income enclave in downtown Toronto. Historically, most kids from Regent Park dropped out of high school. But Mohammed was heading off to university. He belonged to the first class that had been nurtured through high school by a remarkable program called Pathways to Education. Without Pathways, he joked, “I’d probably be doing drugs.”

Ontario’s high school students are graduating at the highest levels ever seen.
According to Education Ministry figures released today, the province’s graduation rate rose to 77 per cent last year, equivalent to 115,500 students.
The graduation rate is up from 75 per cent in the 2006-07 school year, and 68 per cent in 2003-04.

Yesterday, we told the inside story of how a psycho-educational assessment of a student is done. It was an extraordinary look at a process usually cloaked in mystery. Today, 13-year-old Josh and his mother Linda (whose names we have changed to protect their privacy) get the test results – and, perhaps, a lifeline.
