Monday, August 10th, 2009

TheStar.com – Opinion/Editorial – Creative thinking on school closings
August 10, 2009.

People don’t like to see a school close in their community. But to ensure high quality education for students in this era of declining enrolment, some schools must.

Over the last seven years, 90,000 fewer children have enroled in Ontario public schools, and the trend is continuing with 56,000 fewer students expected over the next four years. That is the equivalent of hundreds of empty schools across the province.

There are more autistic children on a waiting list to get government-funded therapy than there are children actually receiving the one-on-one help.

The latest provincial government statistics show 1,306 children are getting intensive behavioural intervention (IBI), while 1,513 are waiting for it. Another 389 kids are waiting to be assessed so they can qualify for therapy – and earn a spot on the waiting list.

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

TheStar.com – Opinion – Early learning makes business sense
June 22, 2009.   Carol Goar

There was a time when early childhood education was a fancy name for daycare. Women knew they couldn’t convince politicians to support working mothers, so they made the case that investing in children was good public policy.

Then science caught up to semantics.

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

TheStar.com – Opinion – Get the fees out of high schools
June 16, 2009.   Jonathan Scott, Director of policy for the Ontario Student Trustees’ Association

It’s the hidden costs that kill. We work so hard to find the deal, finding the best and the cheapest cellphone, only to learn about the system-access fee. We invest in education, making it the best and the cheapest, only to learn about student-activity fees.
