Kids show way in fight for school

Monday, July 28th, 2008

TheStar.com – Opinion – Kids show way in fight for school
July 28, 2008. Carol Goar

It all started in a Grade 6 classroom.

Charlie Angus, MP for the vast northern Ontario riding of Timmins-James Bay, paid a visit to St. Patrick School in Cobalt this spring to tell the students about the children of Attawapiskat, who have no school.

The Cree community has been fighting for eight years to get one. It has been promised a new school by three Indian affairs ministers. But last December, the kids’ hopes were crushed when the current minister, Chuck Strahl, cancelled the planned school.

How to get more low-cost housing

Monday, July 28th, 2008

TheStar.com – Opinion/editorial – How to get more low-cost housing
July 28, 2008

A promising approach to delivering more affordable housing is being pursued by social activists, planners and politicians alike.

It’s called “inclusionary zoning,” and it works by requiring developers of all major new residential projects to set aside a certain percentage of units for low-income people. In return, they are offered lower development charges, increased densities and other benefits.

Nursing home sector needs basic reform not more money

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

TheStar.com – Opinion – Nursing home sector needs basic reform not more money: Social goal of caring for elderly entrusted to firms with incentive to cut costs, and corners
July 22, 2008. Ernie Lightman

Personally, I’m quite relieved the Ontario ombudsman won’t be able to investigate the many individual complaints about quality of care in the province’s nursing homes.

His mandate does not allow this.

And that’s a good thing.

What we do not need is another exposé of horror stories in nursing homes.

Jail ‘a lazy response to poverty’

Saturday, July 19th, 2008

TheStar.com – special/Crime – Jail ‘a lazy response to poverty’
July 19, 2008

Imagine pockets of cities where so many residents are in jail and prison, and for so long, that by the time they are released their incarceration will have cost more than $15 million. Imagine these people being released and returning home to the same place and conditions where the trouble began and, within two years, 4 in 10 are back behind bars.

It is a costly human migration pattern, and it is real.

TheStar.com – Crime – Getting tough on crime is toughest on the taxpayer
July 19, 2008. Sandro Contenta, Jim Rankin, Betsy Powell and Patty Winsa, Staff Reporters

Canadians firmly support federal measures that will put more offenders behind bars for longer, according to a poll conducted for the Star.

That’s good news for the Tory government but bad news, experts say, for the criminal justice system and for taxpayers themselves.

July 19, 2008. Sandro Contenta. Betsy Powell, Jim Rankin, Staff Reporters

Graham D’Souza spent the better part of his youth running with a street gang. He carried a gun, sold crack and was busted for robbery. By his early 20s, he had a bullet lodged in his heart.

Marin’s end run

Friday, July 18th, 2008

TheStar.com – Opinion/editorial – Marin’s end run
July 18, 2008

Ontario Ombudsman André Marin should be congratulated for finding a way around government restrictions on his authority to investigate standards in the province’s nursing homes.

Marin, clearly frustrated by a government that refuses to give him the power to investigate what goes on in the province’s 622 nursing homes, announced this week that he will launch an investigation into how the government responds to complaints about conditions in those homes. The review is to be completed within six months.

Now that Children’s Minister Deb Matthews’ consultations on poverty in Ontario are winding down, those poor people who spoke out, sometimes trembling in fear, sometimes with tears emphasizing every part of their presentations, must wait in high anticipation for the government to put forward its plan.
