There is a large appetite for the review and reform of Ontario’s family courts, Ontario Chief Justice Warren Winkler said today.

Currently, there are only 17 “unified,” or dedicated family courts scattered in various pockets of Ontario. None are located in Toronto.

“The time has arrived to implement a properly serviced unified family court system,” Winkler said a ceremony to mark the official opening of Ontario’s courts for the year.

Two of Ontario’s chief justices are calling for the province’s family court system to be scrapped and replaced with a new model that would see custody and property disputes decided by judges housed in the same courthouse, alongside a variety of family support services.

Yet thousands of Ontario children of broken marriages are being denied their due, despite repeated provincial vows to crackdown on deadbeat parents. As the Star’s Daniel Dale reported on the weekend, the problem is getting worse, not better.

As Ontario schoolchildren return to class this week, some are facing more than just back-to-school jitters.

Labour troubles loom over the new school year after collective bargaining agreements for the province’s teachers expired on Sunday. The Catholic teachers’ union has already settled with the province, but unions representing public elementary and high school teachers have yet to strike a deal.
