TheStar,com – Ontario/Parentcentral.ca – Dental disease hurting our kids
November 18, 2008. Tanya Talaga

Complications from tooth decay are one of the leading causes of school absences and Ontario is failing to provide access to proper dental care for the province’s underprivileged children, says the Ontario Dental Association.

Ontario’s children don’t need to be walking around with rotting teeth, association president Dr. Larry Levin told the Star.

Tracking discrimination

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

TheStar.com – Opinion/editorial – Tracking discrimination
November 18, 2008

The collection of race-based statistics remains controversial, but there are signs that Ontario is increasingly ready to accept this approach to tracking discrimination.

A wide-ranging report on youth violence, released last week, listed “the collection of race-based data in all key domains” as one of its priority recommendations. In response, Premier Dalton McGuinty has indicated he is seriously considering the idea.

November 18, 2008. Jack Layton

These are uncertain times in Canada.

We know many Canadians are worried about their future, about their children’s future. They want their leaders to set aside their differences and make this minority government work.

Summoning hope from despair

Monday, November 17th, 2008

TheStar.com – Opinion – Summoning hope from despair
November 17, 2008. Jim Coyle

In its goals of a fairer, safer, better world, the report on the roots of youth violence delivered last week by Roy McMurtry and Alvin Curling was as utopian and idealistic as anything in the Gospels.

Yet in its images of the urban hell to come if prompt action is not taken, it was as chilling and contemporary as The Wire.

“The sense of nothing to lose and no way out that roils within such youth creates an ever-present danger,” it said.

A new proposal to pay the rent

Monday, November 17th, 2008

TheStar.com – Opinion/editorial – A new proposal to pay the rent
November 17, 2008

A man on welfare in Thunder Bay gets the same amount to pay his rent as someone in Toronto, where rents are far higher. That makes little sense. And what about a woman holding down a job but still living in poverty? She gets no help to pay the rent at all.

November 17, 2008. Laurie Monsebraaten, Social Justice Reporter

An extra $189 a month would buy a lot of groceries for Pamela Soutar and her two daughters, who are left with just $74 of their welfare cheque after paying rent and utilities for their cramped High Park walk-up.

Blaming racism (as usual)

Monday, November 17th, 2008

NationalPost.com – Opinion/editorial – Blaming racism (as usual)
Published: Monday, November 17, 2008

Canadians like to think of themselves as more progressive and enlightened than our American neighbours when it comes to the issue of race. But are we? U. S. voters just elected their first black president, who himself has spoken eloquently about the need for black men to take responsibility for many of the problems besetting their communities. Here in Canada, on the other hand, we often seem to be stuck in a politically correct 1980s time warp.

Caring for aging boomers

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

TheStar.com – Opinion/editorial – Caring for aging boomers
November 15, 2008

Alzheimer’s disease. A bad stroke. These are the things we expect will send seniors into nursing homes. But what about not being able to mow the lawn or shop for groceries? A lack of home care and community supports means difficulty with these simple tasks can force seniors from their homes into an institutional life long before it’s necessary, argues this year’s Atkinson Fellowship writer Judy Steed.
