A weakening economy has resulted in the “alarming increase” of Ontarians using food banks – a 13 per cent jump since last fall – according to a report released today by the province’s food banks.

And if the current trend continues, it is projected that next year about 350,000 Ontarians will be using food banks each month, making that an all-time high, said the Ontario Association of Food Banks.

Toronto suburbs are seeing child poverty increase at an alarming rate, spurred on by population growth that outpaces the social service support needed to accommodate families moving in, according to a report released today by the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto.

It is unfortunate and heartbreaking that a Regent Park single-mother is already concerned about how she will be able to afford Christmas gifts for her children in 2009. Although the Star’s Santa Claus fund is an admirable program, stories such as this one point to the desperate need for the government of Ontario to properly deliver on their poverty reduction strategy this month.

They will soon be pounding the pavement, many starting in January, when you can bet that their jobs in retail will disappear.

The sale signs are already grim. Consumer confidence is the lowest it’s been since 1982.

At Queen’s Park on Nov. 4, grandparents and grandchildren looked on as 52 Liberal MPPs defeated a motion by NDP member Paul Miller. The motion asked that the government cancel a recent directive cutting off “Temporary Care Assistance” funding to grandparents raising grandchildren.

I’m among the affected grandparents, and this is not how I expected to spend my sunset years.
